Oklahoma State made a run. The Cowboys thought they could lure Bill Self away from Kansas. That just wasn’t going to happen.
Hopefully Poke athletic director Mike Holder realized it was going to be a long, long shot to get Self. It was a nice dream, but it wasn’t reality. You don’t leave Kansas for Oklahoma State in basketball. That would be silly. I don’t care if you were an alum of the school.
So what direction does OSU head?
Why is it so imperative to hire a big name coach for a lot of money? That doesn’t mean you are going to have a lot of success. The important thing isn’t to make a splash. Get a guy that you think can get the program back into the NCAA tournament.
Look what Joe Castiglione has done at Oklahoma. There was the hire of a young assistant football coach named Bob Stoops. That has worked out pretty well.
Then two years ago he went after a guy that many people didn’t know much about, Jeff Capel. There were those who knew he played at Duke. But how many could have told you he was the head coach at VCU.
Oklahoma State is a very good basketball program. Gallagher-Iba is a great place to watch a game. And the fans are devoted.
Holder needs to talk to a lot of people in the basketball community. He needs to find out what they say. This is a very important hire for his legacy of athletic director at Oklahoma State.
