Even though Bob Stoops wasn’t thrilled the way his team scrimmaged yesterday, most of the Sooner coaches agree that there has been progress in some areas this spring.
The major problem has been the injury bug. That’s why the Sooners only practiced once last week. They’re trying to get healthier for Saturday’s spring game.
Probably the biggest concern heading into the upcoming season will be the defensive secondary. Gone are starters Reggie Smith, D.J. Wolfe and Marcus Walker. That’s pretty good talent that must be replaced.
However, defensive secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright has enjoyed what he has seen thus far from some of his younger players.
Cornerback Jonathan Nelson had an outstanding scrimmage. Dominque Franks has had a very good spring as has a third cornerback, Brian Jackson. There those on the coaching staff that don’t think there’s going to be a big drop-off from last season in the secondary.
Going into the spring the Sooners said they wanted to keep Lendy Holmes at safety, but that would depend on how the others performed at corner. Well it appears that Holmes will now remain at safety and be paired with Nic Harris as the two starters.
Another key is the linebacking position. Ryan Reynolds is so important. It seems his entire career at OU has been slowed by injuries. He has to play well replacing Curtis Lofton in the middle.
Again, there was some optimism after the scrimmage because of the way Reynolds performed. He looks a lot more comfortable playing the middle than he did on the outside a year ago. If this junior from Las Vegas plays well, the Sooner defense will have a chance to shine.
And pleasant surprise this spring has been the play of defensive end Frank Alexander. The redshirt freshman is very aggressive and is an outstanding pass rusher. The Sooners are deep and talented at D-end.
