More Recruiting

It was interesting to see how McGuinness stud Daniel Orton has narrowed his list down in recruiting. He has a top seven and it appears that it will be a very tough for either OU or Oklahoma State to land him.

He says Kentucky is at the top of his list. He likes the fact that the Wildcats are all about basketball, not football. That’s why I think before it’s all over with Kansas is going to be right there. Don’t forget that former KU star Cal Henry has been coaching him this summer on that Athletes First team.

The other five schools are Ohio State, UCONN, OU, Texas and UCLA.

Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford has a lot of catching up to do. Orton seems a little concerned about the Cowboys because they haven’t made it into a NCAA tournament for three straight years. He will sit back and watch the style the Pokes play and how many wins they can garner this season.

He has been to a lot of Oklahoma games and he has seen all of the empty seats. He says he wants to see how the fans will support this year’s club with Blake Griffin and Willie Warren.

What will probably happen, if history is followed, is that there will be a lot of empty seats in December, but when conference play begins the Lloyd Noble will be close to capacity. And that will probably not be good enough to land this 6-10, 260 pound senior.

By the way, has anyone thought about how much the Sonics will hurt OU and OSU hoops? And they will definitely hurt OU more because of how close Oklahoma City is to Norman.

The buzz about the Sonics is tremendous. Everywhere you go people are talking about them. There’s no doubt the NBA is big-time. And the entertainment dollar people have can be stretched just so far, particularly the way gas prices are these days

What OU and OSU is going to have to do to fill the arenas is win, and I’m not just talking about getting into an NCAA tournament. If the Cowboys and Sooners are just average, they are going to be severely hurt by the new NBA team in OKC.

Don’t Like

It’s not the selection that I would have made.

I was surprised, and not in a good way, the Seattle-Oklahoma City SuperSonics selected Russell Westbrook with the fourth pick in the NBA draft.

Was Westbrook the fourth best player in this draft? Absolutely not! Was he the best point guard left? Absolutely not!

Sure, he’s a good defense player. That helps. But when is the last time you’ve seen a player picked that high that only averaged 12 points a game? Doesn’t make any sense.

Does Westbrook make the Sonics a lot better like that high of a draft choice should. I don’t see it. In fact the way other teams that were really bad this year draft, I think the Sonic now have a chance to be the worst team in the NBA this upcoming season.

What even makes the choice more puzzling was the fact he wasn’t even the starting point guard at UCLA. In fact, after the selection, a pretty fair coach by the name of Jeff VanGundy questioned if Westbrook really was a true point guard.

This was a draft that the Sonics could have made a statement. There were a lot of players that can be difference makers in the upcoming years in the league.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Westbrook, is one of those guys.

Big Catch

You never know just how good a recruit is going to be until you get him on campus. Or unless his name is Adrian Peterson. Everyone kind of figured he would be pretty good.

Anyway, the Oklahoma coaching staff is really excited about the commitment from Tom Wort that they received a couple of months ago. Wort is a linebacker from New Braunfels, TX. Now he’s not the biggest at 6-1, 210 pounds. But he’s one of the fastest linebackers you’ll see. He runs a 4.42 40.

He shunned the likes of Florida, Miami, UCLA. LSU and Nebraska to give the verbal commitment to OU. He will graduate high school in Demcember and head to OU a month later.

How good do the Sooners think he is?

“He’s the best linebacker that we’ve seen in 10 years in the state of Texas,” said one insider. “He is a great prospect. He’s going to be big-time.”

Does that mean the Sooners thinks he’s even better than Derrick Johnson? If you remember Johnson was a prep star in Wacxo, went on to Texas and became an All-American and then a first round NFL selection.”

“Yes, we think he is a better prospect.”

There are those asking why the Sooners are taking so many linebackers in the class of 2009. The already have five verbally committed for the upcoming recruiting class.
The reason is easy to answer. After the 2009 campaign, the Sooners graduate five linebackers–Ryan Reynolds, Lamont Robinson, Keenan Clayton, Mike Balogun and J.R. Bryant. So they had to stock up in the upcoming recruiting class.

And by the way, the more you hear rumblings, Reynolds may have a huge fight on his hand to keep his starting middle linebacking job. If Travis Lewis solidfies himself on the outside, like the Sooners think he will, Austin Box will be moved to the middle. The Sooners love the athleticism of this former all-stater from Enid. It’s all about getting your best players on the field at the same time.

Nice Future

How much fun is it going to watch these two guys play college basketball in this state this year?

It was absolutely no surprise that Willie Warren and Keiton Page put on a show last night in the Faith 7 all-star basketball game in Shawnee. It would have been a big-time disappointment if it had happened any other way.

Page scored 37 points to help lead his Oklahoma squad to a 121-101 victory over Texas. Warren won the slam-dunk contest and then went on to set a Faith 7 record by scoring 41 points. Warren will be at Oklahoma this season and Page will be playing for new Oklahoma State skipper Travis Ford.

     Both have question marks.

The one concerning Warren is just how long will he remain a Sooner. There are those who say he’s good enough to head into the NBA after just one season. He’s that good. Others think he will be around the college game for two years.

“Let’s just say we don’t expect Willie to be at OU for four years,” laughs Jeff Capel. “I had people tell me this past year that they thought he was the best high school guard in the country. He’s really a very talented player.”

The question about Page> It’s all about his size. He’s just 5-9. But everyone who has watched this outstanding shooter from Pawnee in action say he will have an outstanding college career.

And Page doesn’t need to be forced into action right away at OSU. He will back up Byron Eaton at the point guard slot this year.

“I wasn’t that big in college and it didn’t hurt me that much,” said Ford, who had an outstanding college career at both Missouri and Kentucky. “I think Keiton will fit in perfectly to what we are trying to do. He can get up and down the court and he really shoots the ball well. He’s a terrific player.”

If Warren is as good as everyone thing he is, then Oklahoma has a shot to win the Big 12. And Page will make it very difficult for opponents to play zone defense against the Cowboys.

Big Man

It is a late recruting batttle that now features three teams.

When Ekpe Udoh announced he was transferring from the University of Michigan, he got a lot of attention. Sure, he’s still raw, but he did lead the Big 10 Conference in blocked shots this past year. And it’s not always easy to find an athletic big man.

Well, Udoh has said he will decide between Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Baylor. The Bears became a late entrant into the picture. He was already visited all three schools and is currently in the process of doing it one more time and should have a decision very shortly.

Obviously Oklahoma State is very much in the picture because he played at Edmond Santa Fe with current Cowboy starter Obi Muonelo. The pair have been long time friends.

Also, the Cowboys have a big-time need for some help up front. Even though Udoh has a long ways to go offensively, he could come in and help right away.

The pitch the Sooners are throwing is that he could be the man to come in and replace Blake Griffin when the Sooner sophomore exits for the NBA next season. Also, they are telling him he could improve immensely going against Griffin in practice every day.

Udoh will have to sit out next season and then will have two years of eligibility remaining.

It’s interesting that neither OSU or OU offered this athletic big man a scholarship coming out of high school. It’s also interesting that many think it will be Baylor who eventually will land Udoh.

A Changed Man

Can this be the same Kobe Bryant that we’ve seen in action over the last few years. And I’m not talking about what he has done on the basketball court.

There’s little doubt about the abilities of this 29-year-old superstar. There’s no doubt when his playing time is finished he will go down as one of the greats who has ever played the game.

It appears that he has finally grown up. This is a Bryant who has criticized his own teammates. This is a Bryant who has demanded a trade from the Lakers. This is a Bryant who at times cared only about Kobe. He was indeed very selfish.

Now he appears to be a different man. That’s why he won his fist MVP award this year. He is making people around him better. He cares about his team. He wants to win a championship.

Well he’s going to get that chance. His Los Angeles Lakers have been dominant in the playoffs. They haven’t lost at home and have shown the ability to win on the road. That’s a combination that usally leads to a title.

However, it’s not going to be easy. The Boston Celtics are good–very good. They were the best team in the NBA during the regular season. They dominated the West. But in the first two rounds of the playoffs they couldn’t win a road game. That raised a lot of doubts about being able to win a championship.

But those doubts were erased when they were able to go into Detroit and come away with two victories. That was impressive.

Who do the Celtics put on Kobe? Do you guard him with Paul Pierce? That’s a good way to get the Boston star into some serious foul trouble.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Kobe Bryant will have a great series. He will dominate. But I’m going with the Celtics in seven games because they have the homecourt advantage.

Joshua Jarboe

The Oklahoma coaching staff seemed confident that star recruit Joshua Jarboe would eventually get his legal problems settled and make it to Norman. The target date they thought would be somewhere around mid-June.

Well, it’s happened sooner than that.

Jarboe, the highly sought-after wide receiver from Georgia had his felony charges of bringing a gun to his high school dropped from a felony to a misdemeanor. The  OU athletic department has a policy in which a student charged with a felony can not be on scholarship.

What Jarboe’s legal team did was accept the plea bargain verdict. That will allow him to join the Sooner team. That had been some concern that even if Jarboe’s legal problems were taken care of that he still wasn’t out of the woods because he needed to qualify academically. But one OU insider insisted that he has gotten a qualifying score on his ACT.

You can bet that Bob Stoops will have a short leash on this prize recruit. Oklahoma is taking a chance with Jarboe. But they say everyone that they talk with about this outstanding athlete says he’s a good kid and this is the first time that he has been in trouble.

Jarboe will get a chance to help the Sooners immediately. The OU receiving corps was not impressive during the spring. Now bring in a healthy Adron Tennell, Ryan Broyles and freshman like Jarboe and you might have a chance to be pretty good in this department.

They are hoping that Jarboe can eventually be another Malcolm Kelley and stretch the field. He’s a big target at 6-3 and has 4.45 speed in the 40. Still to be decided is when he will arrive in Norman this summer.

Sampson Back

There’s a Sampson back living in Norman. Of course, it’s not Kelvin.

But moving back is his son, Kellen. And he has a new job. He’s working for Jeff Capel.

Yes, he has been hired to become a graduate assistant coach for the Sooner cagers. He had planned to finish on getting his Masters degree at Indiana. But obviously that was scraped when Kelvin was forced out as the Hoosiers boss.

It’s really a nice gesture on the part of Capel to bring Kellen into the program. It shows that he remains friends with Kelvin and was willing to help his son. There’s no doubt that some day Kellen is going to be a head coach somewhere. He’s a hard-worker who is extremely intelligent. And he does know a little about the game of basketball since he’s been around it his entire life.

And while on the subject of OU basketball, right now it appears that Keith Clark will not be back in the program. He was supposed to be getting his academics in order at Rose State.

The word that is spreading is that he did not get that accomplised. If that true, it’s shame because he may never get another chance to play basketball at a Division One school. He has a lot of talent, but apparently did not work very hard in the classroom.

That will give incoming recruit Kyle Cannon a chance to get a lot of minutes. Cannon is the 6-8 junior college player from San Jacinto, TX. Capel says he has excellent offensive skills.

Jack Mildren

     We lost a great one.

And I’m not just talking about the ability of a former wishbone quarterback. Sure, in my opinion Jack Mildren was the best option signal caller Barry Switzer ever coached. He made things look so easy.

But Mildren was more than an ex-jock. He was a good guy. I was amazed with the courage he showed as he was battling cancer. During the last football season we would do a 20 minute show at 6 p.m.

Off the air we would talk about that battle with cancer. At that time he looked like he was winning the battle. He always had a smile on his face, even though he knew it could come back.

     This guy was tough.

I was amazed how he fit so quickly into sports talk radio. He worked his butt off to find out what was going on in sports. He was an expert. He was on the internet all the time. He was reading all kind of newspapers.

It was important to Jack Mildren to be good at what he was doing. And that he was. He wouldn’t back off giving his opinion. He was fair. That was a major part of his personality.

I had known Jack Mildren for about 40 years. Where ever you went, you weren’t going to hear someone say a negative word. How could you not like this guy? He treated everyone with a certain kindness.

Tears are coming to my eyes as I write this. I will miss Jack Mildren. He was a great football player, but even a better person.

Recruiting Battle

It’s going to be nothing but fun to watch what happens in the recruitment of Daniel Orton over the next few months. There’s no doubt that right now he is keeping everyone guessing.

This 6-10, 260-pound center from McGuinness High School is one of the top prep basketball players in the country. Rivals.com has him ranked as the No. 8 player in the nation in the class of 2009. So you can imagine the attention that he is getting right now.

Both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have their “ins” with this athletic big man.

Orton’s step-brother, Terrence Crawford played at OSU. There was some word that for whatever reason, OSU wasn’t recruiting him hard under Sean Sutton. That was not true. What happened was that Sutton just couldn’t get in on him. It wasn’t because he didn’t want him.

The Sooners have an edge on some because OU assistant coach, Oronde Taliferro, is related to the Orton family. Over the years he had spent a lot of time coming to Oklahoma City to visit the family. We’ll see how that plays out.

There are many who think Orton will wind up out of state.

“He wants to go to a big-time basketball power,” said one insider.

He talks quite a bit about Florida and Ohio State. But let’s not take Kansas out of the equation. He has become tight with Xaiver Henry, the Putnam City whiz who is ranked as the No. 2 player in the land.

Henry will select between Kansas and Memphis. But just about everyone thinks it will be a shocker if he doesn’t become a Jayhawk. He grew up a Kansas fan because his mother and father went to school in Lawrence.

Don’t look for Orton to make a decision any time in the near future. He’s just having too much fun with all of the recruiting process.
