Nothing But Speed

There are those haunting memories of the West Virginia fiasco in the Fiesta Bowl. It was Oklahoma that was supposed to have all of the great athletes. It was the Sooners that was supposed to have the great team speed.

But as you watched the game you saw quickly that OU wasn’t the team that had the most quicks. It wasn’t even close.

We’ve been fooled by the team speed of the Sooners. That was evident when the OU players ran for the NFL scouts. People were shocked by the slow times.

Bob Stoops is a very intelligent man. He realized that his team must improve its speed. So what is he doing? He’s putting together a recruiting class right now that doesn’t feature size. It’s all about speed.

Thus far the Sooners have 10 commitments for the class of 2009. Of the 10, only one weighs more than 220 pounds. And of the 10, there are eight players that run at least a 4.5 40 yard dash

Do you see what the Sooners are trying to do?

OU got a big boost this past week when it got verbals from defensive end Justin Chaisson of Las Vegas and linebacker Tom Wort from New Braunfel, TX. Both were recruited by most of the big boys of college football.

Wort is an unusal story. He came from England where we was a soccer player. The Sooners need better speed at linebacker. He reportedly has run a 4.42 40.

We have all assumed that OU is a team with great speed. Well, recently we have assumed wrong. Stoops is now in the process of trying to fix that problem. And he’s doing a very good job in this area.
