No Big Story

     It simply was a non-story.

What I’m talking about is all that conjecture that Jeff Capel was going to South Carolina. It had several media people in a frenzy. In turn, they made the general public actually think it could happen.

“This was simply a case of some people trying to make a story out of nothing. I really couldn’t believe what was being said. It just wasn’t a story,” said OU athletic director Joe Castiglinoe.

How many times did Capel have to come out and say he wasn’t interested in South Carolina? He never had any conversations with the school. He was very happy at Oklahoma.

There were those who just ignored what he was saying. They wanted to believe what they thought was the truth. That was a big mistake.

Sure, Capel might have used the lure of the Gamecocks to get more money. But he was going to get a nice raise anyway after the season the Sooners had just concluded.

Castiglione and David Boren are not going to let a quality coach get away just because of money. That’s not happening. They have been very successful in putting together an outstanding athletic department. They know what they have to do to have one of the best athletic departments in the country.

Capel never entertained the idea of going to South Carolina. Why would he? It’s not even close to the type of job that Oklahoma has been over the last 30 years.

Now is Capel going to be at Oklahoma forever? Probably not. When a big-time program like an Indiana, a Duke, a Kentucky or a North Carolina come calling, then he will say good-bye to Oklahoma.

But he’s certainly not leaving for a place like South Carolina. Let’s end this story that never should have been a story.
