We’ve been hearing the rumors for about a couple of years. The day that Sean Sutton took over as Oklahoma State’s basketball coach, the whispers were that Boone Pickens and Mike Holders didn’t want him.
What we were hearing was that Boone’s money would try to buy Bill Self. Now we’re going to see if there’s any truth to that at all.
The money we hear that is being tossed around is $40 million over 10 years. No offense to Self, he’s a great guy and a tremendous coach. But should he all of a sudden be the highest paid coach in the country? I don’t think so.
Self would be a great hire for Oklahoma State. But is it possible?
“Bill Self isn’t coming to Oklahoma State,” Eddie Sutton said about a month ago. “Why would he do that? Kansas is a much better job.”
Even is there was that kind of dough on the table. And even is Self was tempted to go back to the school where he played, how about a matter of loyality?
Self is close with Eddie. He coached Sean at OSU. Right now the Sutton family isn’t exactly thrilled what has been going on in the program. Even if Self wanted the job, I think he would turn it down just to respect the Suttons.
Where will Holder go next? Don’t know. If they do put a bunch of money to get someone, then they probably will get an outstanding, proven coach. But some of these guys may just use an offer to get a raise at the place they are already coaching.
The pressure is on Holder. He needes to bring in someone who the Cowboy fans consider to be a home run. Let’s just see how much money talks.
