There was concern about the Oklahoma receiving crop before Joshua Jarboe was sent home. Now what do the Sooners do?
Well, they have to work with what they have. There’s no Malcolm Kelly on the team. There’s a question mark about the health of Adron Tennell. He came to OU ranked as one of the premier high school receivers in the country.
There was hope that this Texas native could develop into a Kelly type receiver because he had the outstanding size (6-4, 190). But Tennell really hasn’t done much in his two years at OU.
Now he’s trying to come back from a knee injury and the Sooner coaching staff say that if he’s not at 100 percent health-wise that they will redshirt him. That means that some other guys have to step up.
They are going to move Manny Johnson from his slot receiver position to a wide out. The reason is twofold. They think that redshirt freshman Ryan Broyles can be outstanding in the slot and the second reason is because they need a lot of help outside.
Jarboe had definitley been the most impressive of the three freshmen receivers who were on campus this summer. Still, big things are expected from Muskogee standout Jameel Owens. Many think Owens will be a excellent receiver in time, but they point out he doesn’t have the explosive speed that Jarboe possesses.
The key to the receiving group could be Quentin Chaney. He was highly recruited coming out of the Tulsa prep ranks. He’s now heading into his senior year. Chaney has stood out in two games in his career–the last two Fiesta Bowls.
He needs to become consistent. There have been too many dropped passes. If he can can live up to his potential, then the Sooners have a chance to be okay at the wide receiving positions.
