There are some that are suggesting that Oklahoma not take a quarterback in this upcoming recruiting class. That’s after Kansas City Rockhurst stud Nathan Scheelhaase selected Illinois this week over the Sooners.
It’s obvivous now that it appears OU will not get one of its top QB targets this year. Why? The big reason is that all of these top prospects see that Sam Bradford is just heading into his sophomore year. They don’t want to spend time in Norman sitting on the bench and watching him play.
However, the bottom line is that it’s imperative for Bob Stoops’ club to come up with a signal caller. After this season is over with the Sooners will just have two scholarship quarterbacks–Bradford and Landry Jones. You have to have at least three scholarship players at this criticial position.
So what do they do?
If they can’t get in on any of the remaining top high school QBs in the country, maybe they could head into the junior college ranks. Go after a Joey Halzle type player. Remember Halzle came in from junior college as insurance. He was basically brought in to be a backup player. And that’s what he is right now.
The Sooners need a body. They need someone who can help out if Bradford and Jones both get hurt.
If Oklahoma is unable to get a high-profile quarterback this year it will be imperative that it lands one next season because Bradford will then only have one year left. But that should make the task of recruiting one much easier for the Sooner staff.
