It’s vital for Oklahoma to bring in a top-notch quarterback in this recruiting class. The Sooners had done a good job of this the last three years by signing Sam Bradford, Keith Nichol and Landry Jones.
But Nichol wanted to go somewhere he could play right away. So he transferred to Michigan State. With Joey Halzle heading into his senior year, that means that right now the only two scholarship signal callers are Bradford and Jones for next season.
Thus far the Sooners have struck out on some of the top quarterbacks they have offered this year. They may have one more chance this week when one of the nation’s best will make a decision.
I’m talking about Nathan Scheelhaase of Kansas City Rockhurst High School. He’s 6-3, 185 pounds and runs a 4.5 40. Rivals.com ranked him as the seventh best dual threat quarterback in the country.
The Sooners do have an in because Nathan’s dad played football at Iowa with Bob Stoops and Sooner receiver coach Jay Norvell. This has helped quite a bit in the recruitment.
This talented athlete hit on 87 of 137 pases last year for 1861 yards and 20 TDs. He also ran for 917 yards with 14 more touchdowns. He has an extremely strong arm and does a good job of finding his receivers down the field.
Scheelhaase is going to make his decision known on a Kansas City television station Wednesday night. Many think Oklahoma is the leader at this point. But Kansas and Iowa also are in the picture. He likes Stanford for its academics. And Nebraska is pitching him the thought that he can play right away in Lincoln.
Even though the Sooners feel good about this outstanding prospect, the thought that he’s announcing on a Kansas City TV station doesn’t bode well. Would that mean he’s Kansas-bound?
We’ll find out Wednesday night. Anyway, he’s a key recruit for the Sooners.
