It’s not the selection that I would have made.
I was surprised, and not in a good way, the Seattle-Oklahoma City SuperSonics selected Russell Westbrook with the fourth pick in the NBA draft.
Was Westbrook the fourth best player in this draft? Absolutely not! Was he the best point guard left? Absolutely not!
Sure, he’s a good defense player. That helps. But when is the last time you’ve seen a player picked that high that only averaged 12 points a game? Doesn’t make any sense.
Does Westbrook make the Sonics a lot better like that high of a draft choice should. I don’t see it. In fact the way other teams that were really bad this year draft, I think the Sonic now have a chance to be the worst team in the NBA this upcoming season.
What even makes the choice more puzzling was the fact he wasn’t even the starting point guard at UCLA. In fact, after the selection, a pretty fair coach by the name of Jeff VanGundy questioned if Westbrook really was a true point guard.
This was a draft that the Sonics could have made a statement. There were a lot of players that can be difference makers in the upcoming years in the league.
Unfortunately, I don’t think Westbrook, is one of those guys.
