There just aren’t many years that you have both the talent and the schedule to compete for a national championship. For Oklahoma this was a year to do it.
And let’s use the word WAS because that chance has disappeared.
What happened yesterday in Boulder was a stunner. It was embarrassing for OU. It was a complete meltdown on offense, defense and special teams. How to you blow a 24-7 lead against a team that isn’t very good?
This was one of the biggest stunners in Oklahoma history. Forget about Boise last year. Boise was a good team. The Sooners were only seven point favorites in that one. They were a 22 point favorite against the Buffaloes.
There still are some things that I can’t figure out. Where was Malcom Kelly? He’s only one of the top receivers in the country. There are only three things I can think of.
The Colorado defense did such a good job at defending him. I have a hard time believing that one. No. 2–Sam Bradford didn’t look at Kelly. And No. 3–the OU coaches just didn’t call his number. I can’t wait to hear what Bob Stoops says at his Tuesday press conference.
How could the OU defense crumble like it did? Colorado came ino the game regarded as a good defensive club and bad on offense. So how did it move the ball at will in the second half?
It was obvious the Sooner defense got tired because the OU offense couldn’t get any first downs. But still you have to come up with stops on third and long and fourth and long situations.
How could the offense be so bad? The receivers should get an F for their effort. Their were too many dropped passes. Sam Bradford looked good in the first half. He was seven of 11, with two of thise incompletions being drops. In the second half he looked tentative and had problems.
I thought the offense was extremely conservative. It became very predictable. The offensive line didn’t do a good job. There weren’t a lot of holes for the running backs and ghe protection for Bradford wasn’t the best.
This was a year you had to think the Sooners could win a national title if they got good quarterback play. And that was happenng. They would be favorite in every game they played. There weren’t the difficult road tests like Stillwater and College Station, where they always struggle.
If the Sooners do not run the table and win the rest of their games and get to a BCS bowl, this season is a total disaster.

Al, couldn’t agree with you any more. Oklahoma played terrible and no excuses should be made but I would like to make a couple of observations. I recognize that late in the game Colorado was called for a couple of holding calls, and at critical times. THEY WERE HOLDING THE ENTIRE GAME!!! I guess my crimson colored glasses could have been “fogged” but on almost every offensive play for Colorado holding seemed to be obvious. Very late in the game we punted to Colorado, just prior to their game winning field goal, and Joaquin Iglesias was tackled (in the middle of the field) attempting to make the play. In my opinion it became a factor in the game. Also, the reversal of Iglesias’s catch to force 4th down and a punt was (in my opinion) deplorable. We definately did not play well and the outcome of the game may have been the same but I just despise officiating that seems to be obviously suspect.
Al is dead on. The play calling was tentative at best. Not getting the ball to Malcolm is, as Iglesias stated, inexcusable. Not getting enough touches for Murray is still hard to understand. Maybe, he is not a good practice player and we aren’t seeing why they don’t use him. Seven total touches for him is not what we were thinking when they were going to use him similar to Bush. Wilson is not a great offensive mind and quite frankly, OU can demand that because of the quality of athlete they get and the reputation they have earned. It is unfortunate that the D has not been dominating since the other brother was here. Brent is a great LB coach, however, I don’t believe he can get it done otherwise as this Defense, outside of the DE’s was suppose to be very good and they proved otherwise against a very average if not below average Colorado team. A shame as it was a perfect year for OU. I think even a BCS bowl other than the National title game will still smell of mediocrity given the seasons expectations.
Al, I don’t think I have ever been so disappointed in a sooner team than on Saturday. That team did not look even close to what we had seen the first three weeks. What team will show up in Dallas?? Why do they turn into an unproductive offensive team when they get in to high pressure situations. It is almost like they can’t handle it. Players?? or Kevin Wilson’s play calling?? When they rock they roll, but when they stink, they just flat out embarrass themselves.
OU is good, but we may need to face the fact that it is not THAT good. Also, let’s give some credit to Colorado’s coaching staff. I thought they made the adjustments in the second half. OU showed no creativity and like a lot of others, I felt that they were tentative. I think that the Sooners can defeat Texas and be a factor in the Big XII race and even win it. But, we need to realize that there is parity in college ball. Wouldn’t it be nice to see the top 8 teams in the BCS (or whatever) poll with 10-2 records. Now that’s a recipe for a playoff system like we need. Go Sooners!
Al,
I couldn’t agree with you more. This loss was a complete disaster. Even though it was relatively early in the season, it was against Colorado and that will virtually eliminate OU from any hopes of a National Title. No matter how many of the top 10 teams lose, OU will be hard pressed to recover from this loss. The first BCS rankings come out in a couple of weeks and I figure they will be ranked somewhere around 12, a real tough climb back. Having taken a look at somo of the computer rankings that comprise the BSC rankings, I noticed OU is getting hard in some rankings, even though Sagarin has them at 4, one has them at 30 and the others are still fairly low. Don’t know if this team tried to sit on a lead, or just ran out of gas, or they were simply looking ahead to Texas. And for Malcolm Kelly, I don’t care if they Buffs had a cover 2 on him you have to at least try to get the ball to your best receiver. Let’s just see how they play against Texas. That 10 point spread has me scratching my head.
